Fleet Managers

Busier roads, compressed deadlines, fuel costs, insurance, tax, etc, plus the economic downturn means that fleet operators must look at new ways to cut costs. Reducing blameworthy accidents, which will decrease the need for everything from expensive new parts to the insurance you pay, is an obvious choice. Using psychometric testing in the recruitment and performance review of drivers has been proven to reduce accidents.

Benchmarking success

When you know what you are looking for, it’s a lot easier to see. For safety and risk management being able to pinpoint and benchmark the most effective personality for the role is crucial and the PeopleMaps benchmarking facility makes this possible quickly, accurately and cost effectively.

To find out what accidents are costing your business see The Real Costs of Accidents.

To reduce your accidents follow these steps:

Stage 1 – Create a ‘benchmark’ profile using the existing drivers who are successful in the position.

Stage 2 – Profile your existing workforce to determine the ratio of drivers that match the ‘best fit’ benchmark and those that will require targeted training or coaching to compensate for their divergence from the benchmark.

Stage 3 – Confident that the drivers you employ now have the right attitude and personality-related competencies required, you can implement the PeopleMaps Accident Tracking and Analysis System (ATAS)*.

Use ATAS to record accident details and it will produce reports that will help you to understand when, how and why accidents are occurring so you can take preventative action. This could be as simple as changing  start times on the first day back after a rest period, identifying specific vehicles with unrecognised blindspots, etc. ATAS will help you pinpoint these ‘hot spots’ amid all the variables, knowing that the drivers themselves have the right attitude for the job.

Stage 4 – Psychometrically profile all new drivers against your benchmark to ensure that they are the type of driver you want working for your company. Also profile drivers who have an accident to check that there are no unexpected variances from the benchmark.

You can benchmark using existing successful employees (historical model) or create a benchmark for an entirely new role instantly (competency based).

The results of the PeopleMaps psychometric test form a major part of the recruitment process because everyone can drive to a test standard if they really want to. Drivers are the public face of the company and we want to employ people with the right attitude on the road and the right communication skills. Psychometric testing weeds out the quick-tempered, fiery characters who are perhaps likely to take a big risk. We don’t want those type of people driving our trucks because they will get wound up quickly and that attitude may result in a crash.” - Steve Barker, Health, safety and security manager with Keystone Distribution which recorded a 56% drop in driver accidents in the Basingstoke depot using PeopleMaps benchmarking.

*ATAS is delivered in an excel spreadsheet format so there is no custom software to download in order to use it.
